Issue 72Mana Magazine
October - November 2006 Issue 72

In this special collector’s issue of Mana we pay tribute to the late Maori Queen Dame Te Atairangikaahu. We have a stunning cover photo and some delightfully candid and never-before-published images of ‘The Lady’ by top photographer Sally Tagg. And there are moving tributes from those who knew her well.

We also feature an exclusive photographic record of her six-day tangi at Ngaruawahia through the eyes of veteran Maori photographer, John Miller.

Mana editor Derek Fox played a prominent role in the historic six-hour telecast of Dame Te Atairangikaahu’s tangi which was broadcast nationally, throughout the Pacific, Australia, Europe and on the internet. He gives us some insights into the new King Tuheitia who at 51 has been left some huge shoes to fill by his dainty and popular mothe

Derek was also on board a special flight that travelled to Tonga for the late King’s burial ceremony and was able to note the contrasts between these two recent royal funerals in the Pacific as well as speculate on Tonga’s future under its new ruler.

As a welcome to springtime we feature a new column from fishing legend Bill Hohepa. From now on Bill will be regularly entertaining our Mana readers with plenty of practical fishing tips, yarns and a few tall tales.

And making sure there are fish to catch in future, journalist Aaron Smale examines at the health of the Manawatu River. This once abundant fishing source for local Maori now has an astonishing 130 legal consents to discharge waste into it, including one for giant dairy company Fonterra.

We stick with the environment by taking a hard-hitting look at how rapidly -developing Whakatane has been contaminated by a deadly timber chemical and one man’s fight to do something about it.

Last but not least we are offering our readers the chance to win a luxury weekend for two in Rotorua with a special dinner hosted by TV’s Kai Time chef Pete Peeti and plenty of fine Tohu wine to wash it down with! Simply fill out the readership survey included with this issue of Mana to go into the draw.
