You could rightly say the Golden Shears wouldn’t happen without Maori and after 50 years, it looks like a new generation is taking over this fiercely fought competition. At 13, our cover boy David Gordon is the youngest-ever Golden Shears category champion and a youngish fullah, Cam Ferguson (26), took out the Open Shearing Finals. We asked award-winning photographer Aaron Smale to capture some of the spirit of the Shears in its jubilee year for our special feature on Maori and the shearing industry.

Someone who has struggled with her own demons is singer and child prodigy, Erana Clark.
