Tena ano koutou

In the air… If it flies, chances are Phill Hooker has flown it! Editor Derek Fox, who holds a private pilot’s licence, talks to a man who has lived out his boyhood dreams of flying, despite the odds. Though Phill’s flight path has been bumpy at times, he now owns a flying school, has a fleet of planes named for whanau members, and is keen to encourage more Maori to take to the air.

On the water… Equally enthusiastic about another form of transport is ‘waka mama’ Lisa Maniapoto. She’s just spent a year cramming information about waka of all shapes and sizes, and had lots of ‘hands on’ experience, including in sailing on the Makali’i in Hawaii. Now she dreams of creating a waka voyaging trust for the tamariki back in Te Tai Rawhiti.

On the ice… It’s taken 14 years of hard-out training and discipline for speed skater Blake Skjellerup to achieve his boyhood dream of competing at the Olympics. As far as we know, Blake is the only Maori member of the New Zealand national team which will compete at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. He shares his hopes and rates his chances for a gold.

In the surf… She didn’t win the nationals at Piha over summer, but 14-year-old Sarah Mason, younger sister of champ Airini, is already making a name for herself as an elite surfer on the international circuit.

On the couch … Two new books reveal layers of hidden history. Rachel Buchanan’s The Parihaka Album: lest we forget is a rediscovery of her whanau links with Parihaka and with Maori Wellington. In a special article for Mana, Rachel paints an endearing portrait of her grandmother, Rawinia Bramley.

Historian Judith Binney’s Encircled Lands, the result of many years of careful research, reveals the deception, treachery and legalised theft perpetrated against the people of Urewera. A must read for anyone who is serious about wanting to know the truth about our past.

And also…Health, sport, new films and television shows, bolshie opinions, giveaways (including Stan Walker's debut album) and heaps of other reading in this issue of Mana - New Zealand’s leading Maori lifestyle, current affairs and heritage magazine.
