Tena ano koutou

Maori have always had a love affair with flags. We talk to the only surviving designer of the Tino Rangatiratanga flag and ask her about its original meaning. We discover what she thinks of recent moves to fly the flag on Waitangi Day as an official Maori flag, or even to consider it as our new national flag.

We continue the flag theme with a colourful pictorial feature about some of the many flags Maori have used since European contact and the fascinating stories behind them.

We go on to ask why the mis-spelt name of a little known province in the Netherlands continues to be the official name of our country? Geographic researcher George Holmes reckons it’s high time we ditched ‘New Zealand’ for something more meaningful and he comes up with some suggestions about how we could do it.

Still in a provocative mood we ask what would happen if, as some politicians have suggested, gangs were treated more like terrorists?

The Ninety Mile Beach Houtaewa Challenge dishes out a little more pain than your average marathon. We find out who Houtaewa was and why his race has become such a favourite with runners from all over the world.

Staying in the Far North we capture some of the action from the Kaitaia Rodeo.

Mana Kai goes back in time to look at suggestions for using
our traditional Maori foods. Although written nearly 50 years
ago, they have an astonishing relevance to today’s culinary
fashions. We also feature an award-winning cookbook
produced by a bunch of savvy school kids from Opotiki.

Taking Otara to the world – installation artist Leilani Kake is flying to the US in February to talk about her urban Pacific art. South Auckland-based Leilani deals with highly charged issues surrounding her dual Maori – Cook Island heritage to make strong personal and political statements.

We preview a wide selection of new books, CDs, a great new film, festival shows and as usual, we have plenty of giveaways. Mana is New Zealand’s leading Maori lifestyle, current affairs and heritage magazine.

Mana 86 is on sale from February 12.
